In the 6 months between January and December 2021 the MDA supported 27 residents through employability training and upskilling courses to a total value of £15,676. There were 7 women (26%) and 20 men (74%) supported, with courses covering a variety of areas including hair & beauty (7 residents), construction (10 residents), Security (4 residents), health & fitness (4 residents) and Science/Math/Technology courses (2 residents).

In total for the project year from July 2020 to June 2021 we supported 60 residents through training to a total value of £26,882. This broke down to 12 women (20%) and 49 men (80%), equating to 2.5% of residents supported, and 8% of households. The total courses this year were in Hair & Beauty (12), construction (22), Science/Math/Computing (2), Health & Fitness (6), security (18). As in the July 2019 to June 2020 training year, this past year was heavily influenced by the pandemic, and courses tended to be heavily influenced by the opportunities available for those who sought to continue working during the lockdown, with construction and security being the two most consistent sectors.

‘I came to the MDA looking to apply for courses that were going to further my career. The help and support that I received was unreal. This is help and support I will never be able to pay back and I don’t think the MDA understand how much this has, and will help me and my career.’

While it may seem like relatively small groups of people completing training year on year, taken relative to the size of the community as a whole, and across multiple years, we can see the qualitative as well as quantitative impact on our community. Over the past two years alone the training equates to 5% of residents, or 18% of households. A fifth of households within our community having an increased earning potential over the course of two years is a substantial achievement. As we have noted previously, it may be easy to count the number of residents completing courses and the costs, the wider benefit it has to our community in terms of increased confidence, self-esteem, and earning power for the households concerned, is incalculable.
